The 24-year-old helped Spurs to a 3-1 Champions League win over German giants Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening, a victory that finally put an end to the club’s Wembley woes.
The striker also netted two goals in Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Everton on Saturday, putting his goalless August hoodoo quickly behind him.
He has 103 Tottenham goals in 170 games and has netted 30 times in his past 22 matches for club and country. Not to mention he has also hit over 20 goals in the Premier League for three seasons in a row.
The question is, however, can Kane be considered world class? Is he up there with the likes of Messi and Ronaldo? Does he stand a chance of winning the ultimate individual prize in world football – the Ballon d’Or?
Kane himself knows in order to do that, he must continue his fine form in Europe’s elite competition. He recently said:
“I have said before I want to break into that world-class bracket. To do that you have to play well in the Champions League.
“The Champions League is a big stage, all the best players in Europe, if not the world, are here.
“And to be the best you have to produce your best against the best. I have six group games to prove that by hopefully scoring as many goals as possible and performing well.”
Former Manchester United and Everton player Phil Neville believes Kane will have to take drastic actions to become “that top, top world class Robert Lewandowski-type player.”
“He could have to leave Spurs,” Neville claimed when talking to the ‘BBC’. “If Spurs maintain being a top-four team, that will not be good enough for Harry Kane.
“I think he needs to be challenging for Ballon d’Ors. I think he needs to be challenging for Champions Leagues and if Spurs are always going to be that ‘nearly team’, eventually he will want to leave and join a Real Madrid or a Barcelona.
“There will always be a doubt about Harry Kane until he gets to that level.”
It has to be said, there is still along way to go for Kane to get his hands on the Ballon d’Or, but he is young, extremely talented and certainly on the right tracks to pursue such a dream.
