Cech should start season as Arsenal’s No.1 ―David Seaman

Petr Cech should remain as Arsenal’s number one goalkeeper for the start of the new Premier League season, Gunners legend David Seaman has told talkSPORT.

The arrival of German glovesman Bernd Leno, a £22million summer signing from Bayer Leverkusen, has thrown Cech’s future into doubt ahead of the new campaign.

Leno, 26, has been Leverkusen’s No.1 for the last seven seasons and moves to the Emirates Stadium as one of the most promising goalkeepers in Europe.

New manager Unai Emery has yet to reveal who will be his goalkeeper ahead of his first season in charge, having used both players during their pre-season preparations.

But Seaman says it would be unwise of the manager to immediately install new boy Leno as his first-choice goalkeeper, and should instead stick with 36-year-old veteran Cech for the time being.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Seaman said: “The Cech situation puzzles me a bit, because we still don’t know who is going to number one at Arsenal.

“Would I start the season with Cech? I think so.

“It depends what’s happening in training. Emery will be watching in training and in the friendly games to see who is performing the best.

“I think it would be a big gamble to put Bernd Leno in straight away, because I can’t image Petr Cech wanting to hang around as a number two anywhere at this stage of his career.

“So Emery has to be a bit a little bit careful with his choice.

“But I would still go with Petr Cech.”
