Charity Match: Kanu, Diouf, Amokachi, other African legends lose in Kano

 

A team tagged the African Legends on Thursday lost 1-2 to Kano Pillars in a charity game played at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.

The African Legends team was captained by the former Super Eagles skipper, Nwankwo Kanu.

The charity match which was organised to raise funds for the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the North-East of Nigeria gave the spectators at the stadium a lot of exciting moments.

Aside the former Arsenal star Kanu, the African Legends also paraded Olympiacos of Greece forward Brown Ideye as well as ex-Nigerian internationals Daniel Amokachi, Tijani Babangida, Garba Lawal and Patrick Pascal, among others.

Also, former Senegal and Liverpool striker El Hadji Diouf; ex-South Africa captain Aaron Mokoena and former Zimbabwe striker Benjani Nwaruwari, among others featured for the African stars.

Former Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, Kano Pillars scored their two goals through Akide Ibrahim while former

Bafana Bafana captain Mokoena scored the Legends’ only goal in the match.

Speaking after the match, 1996 and 1999 African Footballer of the Year, Kanu expressed joy at his participation in the charity match.

The former Portsmouth player also lauded the organisers for the initiative to make life easy for the internally displaced persons.

“It’s an opportunity for us to show support for the internally displaced persons and we are glad to be in Kano today.

“The organisers did a good job in organising this game and bringing all these stars here and I want to say a big kudos to them,” said Kanu, who captained Nigeria’s Dream Team to win the Atlanta ’96 Olympic soccer gold.
