Chelsea’s poor run of form continued as they lost on home ground to 20th place Southampton.
Southampton dominated possession from the get go, as Kepa Arrizabalaga was called into action less than 3 minutes into the game while making a great.
It didn’t look like things would go Chelsea’s way as Kalidou Koulibaly picked up a yellow card 4 minutes into the game for a foul on Paul Onuachu.
Graham Potter’s side struggled to get into the game, and soon conceded the lone goal of the game as James Ward-Prowse beautifully taken free-kick got the Saints into the lead.
The result means Chelsea have now won just twice in their last 14 attempts.
The half-time introduction of Raheem Sterling sparked life into Chelsea’s attack as they got a couple of chances but were unable to get an equalizer as a Sterling attempt was blocked blocked by Ainsley Maitland-Niles midway through the second half.
Sterling got another chance a few minutes later but saw his header cleared off the line by Romain Perraud and the follow-up blocked by Roméo Lavia as Potter’s side fail to score a goal for the sixth time in 2023.
There was a very long break in the second half as play was stopped for a while after Cesar Azpilicueta took a boot from Sékou Mara.
