Commonwealth Games: 15 states, FCT, 4 clubs participate in national trials

At least 15 states, FCT and four clubs are participating at the National Weightlifting Trials which opened in Abuja on Thursday, according to Umar Lambu, Secretary-General, Nigeria Weightlifting Federation.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the trial was to select athletes that would represent the country at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXI Commonwealth Games and commonly called as Gold Coast 2018, is an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth.

It is schedule to take place on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia between 4 and 15 April 2018.

According to him, all states are expected to participate but that so far, only 16 states have registered.

Lambu listed the states as: Lagos, Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Plateau, Bayelsa, Niger, Zamfara and Edo, Abia, Adamawa, Imo, Anambra, Oyo, Kano and FCT.

He listed the clubs to include: Nigeria Army, Nigeria Police, Civil Defence and Finest Club.

Lambu said that the athletes would take part in 16 events, eight for males and eight for females.

He listed the events categories for the males as : 56kg, 62kg, 69kg, 75kg, 89kg, 94kg, 105kg and +105kg.

‘’For female categories, we have: 48kg, 53kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 75kg, 90kg and +90kg,’’ he said.
