Female captain of Team Nigeria, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, again confirmed her status as one of the greatest athletes in para powerlifting.
The Nigerian amazon broke her own world record to win gold in the women’s Para Powerlifting final at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The multiple-time world champion on Friday produced a sensational performance, lifting 175kg with her third and final attempt to eclipse her previous world record of 172kg, securing another gold medal for Team Nigeria.
Oluwafemiayo finished atop Group A with an impressive total performance score of 134.8, while compatriot Rita Ferdinard ensured a Nigerian one-two finish by claiming silver with 128.2.

Australia’s Hani Watson settled for the bronze with 111.5, ahead of England’s Louise Sugden (106.5) and Doaa Shayea (93.3). India’s Kasthuri Rajamani did not register a successful result.
In Group B, Cameroon and Kenya also enjoyed impressive outings. Cameroon’s Thamar Gisele Mengue topped the group with a score of 93.8, narrowly edging Kenya’s Joyce Wambui Njuguna, who finished second with 92.2.
Cyprus’ Maria Markou claimed third place with 89.4, while Scotland’s Hope Gordon (75.7), Uganda’s Rebecca Zawedde (63.6), and Vanuatu’s Marek Sahi (51.1) completed the standings.
The women’s Para Powerlifting competition showcased the remarkable strength and determination of athletes across the Commonwealth, with Nigeria stealing the spotlight through Oluwafemiayo’s historic world-record lift, while Cameroon and Kenya also delivered commendable performances to cap an exciting day of competition.
