… as AFN President charges athletes to go for glory
The track and field events of the ongoing 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games will begin on Monday at the Scotstoun Stadium.
Round 1 of the 100 metres race for men and women will take centre stage from 10:10 am.
In the men’s event, reigning national champion, Favour Ashe, will run in Heat 1 of the 100m race while Adekalu Fakorede will file out in Heat 10.
For the women’s 100m, teenage sensation Miracle Ezechukwu will race in round 1 Heat 8 at Noon.
Nigeria’s 100m record holder, Kanyinsola Ajayi, alongside top seed athletes including Rosemary Chukwuma, will not participate in round 1 but will progress to the next round.

Also, US-based Oyesade Olatoye will participate in the Qualifying Round Group A for the women’s Hammer Throw.
The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, has charged the athletes to compete fairly and go for glory in their respective events.
Okowa, who is currently in Glasgow for the games, said he was confident that with the star-studded team, athletics will make Nigeria proud with more medals.
“As athletics events begin, I know that our team is ready and fired up to make the country proud. I charge them to go for glory.
“Our coaches have done a great job keeping the athletes in shape. We are here to support each of them in their events. Our target of 7 gold medals is achievable.
“Athletes should take opportunity of the mouth-watering winning largesse from the National Sports Commission. It is a motivation to better performance,” Okowa stated.
