England arrived at Lord’s needing six Indian wickets and made serious progress before lunch, claiming four in a fiery morning session led by captain Ben Stokes and the returning pace ace Jofra Archer.
The pair brought “quality, intensity and fire to proceedings,” setting the tone for a dominant display in front of an energized home crowd.
India were immediately on the back foot when Rishabh Pant, clearly hindered by an injured finger on his left hand, was dismissed in just the third over of the day.
The pressure mounted swiftly, and just three overs later, Stokes produced a superb delivery that nipped down the slope from the Nursery End to trap KL Rahul lbw.
Stokes was relentless during his nine-over spell, repeatedly challenging the batters. “This time, the England coaching staff weren’t interfering with his plans.
They just let him do his thing,” underscoring the captain’s free rein and focus.
With India reeling at 82 for 7, Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Reddy tried to steady the innings. Despite the bleak outlook, the crowd—particularly the vibrant Indian contingent—rallied behind every defensive shot, every leave, and every single run.
As the ball began to soften, batting conditions slightly improved. In contrast to the 12 false shots in the first hour, there were only eight in the second.
Just as India appeared likely to reach the lunch break with their last two recognised batters intact, Chris Woakes offered a different kind of threat—swing instead of seam. His persistence paid off as he eventually removed Reddy for a hard-earned 13 off 53 balls.
There was no shortage of energy or drama. Archer gave Pant a pointed send-off after his dismissal. Stokes and Reddy shared “a fairly amiable chat” between overs, while Brydon Carse and Jadeja even collided mid-pitch in a moment of chaos.
England’s fielding matched their bowling for intensity. Archer took a spectacular one-handed catch, diving sharply to his right to dismiss Washington Sundar, all part of an effort “spurred on by Stokes who was loath to let the intensity drop.”
