David Moyes: This is what I have to say to Sunderland fans who want me sacked

UNDER-FIRE Sunderland boss David Moyes can understand why some fans want him sacked just three months after arriving at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats are anchored to the foot of the table with no Premier League wins under Moyes following their worst ever start to a Premier League season.

And despite the club’s reputation for hiring and firing with alarming regularity, supporters took to social media in the wake of the 1-0 defeat at West Ham demanding that Moyes gets the axe.

Neither owner Ellis Short nor chief executive Martin Bain want the managerial conveyor belt to be pressed into action yet again .

But Moyes knows it’s vital he gets the club’s huge fan base onside.

“I do think the majority understand the situation we’re in but I don’t take it for granted,” he said.

“I have to earn their support and at the moment, I could understand they didn’t see that because of our results.

“When I came here, I did not expect it to be an awful lot different although obviously, I hoped it would be.

“I can only tell them that we’re doing everything possible to get there and I’ll keep doing it until told differently.”

Moyes insists he has no problem with those who are calling for his head, despite believing a new man in charge the last thing Sunderland needs right now.

“The message to them would be to say I totally understand,” he added.

“If you don’t win games, you know, any manager is in trouble. But it’s a collective job now, not just the manager’s.

“Everyone has focused on the manager in the past but it has to be the staff and the players too.

“Yes, you can change one guy but it’s been proved in the past, that’s not the answer.”

Sunderland head to Southampton tomorrow with their only wins so far this season coming in the EFL Cup against Shrewsbury and QPR.

Moyes was encouraged by aspects of the West Ham display and believes his message is starting to get through to his players.

He said: “More and more in football, it is the top players who take responsibility for what they do and in the main, my players did at West Ham.”
