Liam Delap scored twice as Nottingham Forest secured their first home Premier League victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Manchester City at the City Ground.

Jair Cunha and Delap gave Forest a two-goal lead in the first half after capitalising on defensive errors from City before Rayan Cherki pulled one back shortly after the break.

However, Delap completed his brace with a stunning finish late in the game to end City’s hopes of mounting a comeback.

The defeat was City’s third consecutive loss in the Premier League, leaving them six points behind leaders Arsenal, who defeated Hull City 1-0 earlier on Saturday.

Forest, meanwhile, moved two points clear of the relegation zone into 16th place, while Manchester United dropped into the bottom three.

Forest took the lead when Josko Gvardiol lost possession after a heavy touch and was easily dispossessed by Cunha.

The Brazilian defender drove towards the edge of the penalty area before sending a low shot into the corner of the net.

City’s defensive problems continued when Xaver Schlager won a 50-50 challenge against Elliot Anderson and released Delap.

The striker drove forward from the halfway line without being challenged before firing past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to double Forest’s advantage.

City had opportunities to reduce the deficit before the break, but Erling Haaland’s effort from a tight angle was cleared off the line, while Enzo Fernandez failed to make the most of a headed chance.

Cherki gave the visitors hope early in the second half when he connected with a clearance with a superb half-volley to make it 2-1.

City dominated possession afterwards and pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Forest remained dangerous on the counter-attack.

Delap eventually sealed the victory with a spectacular finish after Morgan Gibbs-White led a quick breakaway, curling the ball high into the corner of the net.

The result gives Forest a much-needed home victory and increases the pressure on City manager Enzo Maresca, whose side have now conceded eight first-half goals in 10 league matches this season.
