The world’s most expensive player was deployed in an unfamiliar defensive midfield role in France’s 4-1 win over Bulgaria on Friday night
Didier Deschamps has told Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba he must up his level of performance.
The world’s most expensive player was deployed in a defensive midfield role in France’s 4-1 win over Bulgaria on Friday night.
But Les Bleus boss Deschamps wasn’t satisfied with the 23-year-old’s level of play in one of his least favoured positions.
“He can and must do better,” Deschamps said of Pogba, who United paid a world record £89million to sign him from Juventus last summer.
“When he has a defensive role like that, that’s not the best for him.
“This is more a construction part, protection as compared to the central hinge. He has everything to do it. He did some good things, some others less good.”
France fell behind to Bulgaria in Paris but a brace from Kevin Gameiro as well as goals from Antoine Griezmann and Dimitri Payet secured a comfortable win for the Euro 2016 finalists.
Of Gameiro’s performance, Deschamps said: “He is there to score goals. He scored two.
“He was very interesting with his movements. He played for the team and his combination with Antoine worked very well.”
