In a no-holds-barred interview with the Argentine media, América goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín has pleaded with fans to stop criticising him for his performance in the national team’s 4-2 loss to Nigeria in November, saying that a goalkeeper should not be rated with only one game.
Prior to the meeting in Krasnodar, Marchesín had not featured for La Albiceleste for three years before making his full international debut against the Super Eagles.
”A match does not define a goalkeeper. If Jorge gave me the opportunity to play it is because he saw I was good in my club, where I continue to work hard to earn a place,” Marchesín told Ole Argentina.
”I do not like to lose anything. Those who know me a little know how I am. What’s more, if we win and they score a goal, I’ll leave with a lot of anger. And the match with Nigeria was no exception.
”I waited a lot for that opportunity and faced it with a tremendous illusion because it also came at the best moment of my career.
”It was a bit angry that there are people who criticized me without knowing how I am doing in Mexico, because maybe the league in which I play does not have much followership in our country, but I have been at a great level for a long time.”
Marchesín will find out if he has been named to Argentina’s 30-man provWorld heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder was ordered to perform 60 hours of community service on Thursday after being found guilty of marijuana possession.
The 32-year-old American, who last fought in November when he beat Haitian-Canadian Bermane Stiverne with a first-round knockout to retain his WBC heavyweight title, was arrested in Alabama last June.
‘We respect the court’s ruling. Of course we were hoping a dismissal would be granted,’ Wilder’s lawyer, Paul Patterson, said. ‘We are going to look at our options of appellate relief and then move on from there.’
When Wilder was pulled over last June for having windows tinted beyond the legal limit, officers smelled marijuana coming from inside his Cadillac Escalade.
Patterson said at the time the marijuana did not belong to his client, who had been out of state for several days and returned home from Georgia in his Rolls Royce before switching to his Cadillac Escalade to run some errands.
Patterson said Wilder has a large fleet of vehicles that associates and friends can access and prefers the Escalade for errands because the tinted windows offer more privacy.
‘All in all it’s a lesson learned for Mr. Wilder not to leave his many vehicles in the care and custody of numerous people or allow them to use them while he is out of town,’ said Patterson.
Wilder, who won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, is scheduled to defend his title on March 3 against Cuban Luis Ortiz. The Bronze Bomber also hopes to meet Britain’s WBA and IBF champion Anthony Joshua later this year.
AJ is set to fight WBO Joseph Parker in late March. Should both he and Wilder emerge victorious from their respective fights, they are set to collide in a stadium blockbuster for all four belts.
