ECW, WWE legend, Sabu dies at 60

ECW and WWE legend Sabu has died at the age of 60.

The news was first reported by PWInsider on Sunday, May 11. At this time, details about his passing are limited.

Sabu wrestled his final match just weeks ago, on April 18, during “WrestleMania Weekend.” He faced Joey Janela in a no-rope barbed wire match that lasted over 17 minutes.

He made his earliest WWE appearances in 1993, although only in dark matches. In later interviews, Sabu said WWE offered him the “Sultan” gimmick, which he declined. The character ultimately went to Rikishi.

AEW paid tribute to the hardcore icon with a heartfelt message:
“From barbed wire battles to unforgettable high-risk moments, Sabu gave everything to professional wrestling. Our thoughts are with his family, his friends and his fans.” — All Elite Wrestling (@AEW), May 11, 2025

After his WWE dark matches, Sabu made his ECW debut and quickly became a staple of the promotion. He also worked for NJPW and WCW before returning to ECW, where he became a two-time ECW World Heavyweight Champion.

Sabu returned to WWE in 2006. At “ECW One Night Stand,” he challenged Rey Mysterio for the World Heavyweight Championship. The match ended in a no contest after both men crashed through a table.

His final WWE match took place on May 1, 2007, in a four-way bout with Tommy Dreamer, Sandman, and Rob Van Dam. Van Dam won the match, and Sabu was released from WWE two weeks later.

He went on to compete on the independent scene and made several appearances in TNA. His retirement match against Janela served as a fitting end to one of wrestling’s most dangerous and daring careers.
