Edet wins 6th Seyi Makinde Women Support Pro-Invitational Golf

A member of Ibadan Golf Club (IGC), Monday Edet on Sunday won the 6th edition of the Seyi Makinde Women Support Pro-Invitational and Amateur Golf Competition.

Edet, who is playing handicap 0, scored a Gross of 145 in the two-days ahead of Lekan Ogunbameru who scored 147 Gross on count back over Olusegun Emmanuel who also had 147 Gross.

In his address, Oyo State governor and the sponsor of the tournament, Engineer Seyi Makinde said this would have been the 7th edition but COVID-19 hindered it from taking place.

Makinde said that he was glad about the consistency of the Competition.

”I thank Ronke Adepetu, the initiator of this annual competition. Governors will come and go but this competition will keep taking place,” he said.

He said that globally  sports is a 60 billion dollars industry and what slice of that do we have in Nigeria and Oyo state?

“Do we have the talents? Yes we do. At the Golf Clinic in the state in April many outstanding young golfers U-17 were discovered.

“We are remodeling the stadiums in the state to further develop sports. We are spending between five to six billion naira on the stadiums.

“Once the stadiums are completed we can host any sporting activity. By the end of our tenure we would have hosted a FIFA class tournament,” he said.

Edet disclosed that he was dedicating the win to Quadri Azeez, his caddy who was very instrumental to him winning.
He said that Azeez was more than just a caddy to him because he was geared at always making him win.

“I feel really happy and grateful to God for this victory. Every golfer deserves a caddy like mine, I must say he’s my friend and not a caddy.

“I’m grateful to my father, Seye Omisore, he’s my backbone and inspiration. He pushes me in every aspect for my getting better,” he said.

The captain, Oladiran Ibironke said it gladdened  his heart that Gov. Makinde deemed it fit to use the platform of the game of gold as a vehicle to propagate Women Empowerment Initiatives.

Ibironke said that the uniqueness of golf in terms of it’s set rules and peculiar regulations make it a veritable means to exhibit value based women empowerment techniques

“I am fully aware and not unmindful of the political inclination or lineage of the governor (Omi titun).

”However the game of Golf transcends politics and it is apolitical in nature, the game is on a higher pedestal than politics, its language is entirely and absolutely non political.

“I want the ladies section to sensitise more ladies against the next edition as the intention behind this tournament is solely meant for the purpose of awareness of women and their active participation in politics cum governance.

“Which is very fundamental and perhaps very appropriate in the light of the present economic reality in our dear country.

”I hope that more women will take a cue from this by identifying with the growth and development of Golf,” he said.
Also, the initiator of the tournament, Adepetu thanked the sponsor for keeping his words since the beginning of the

tournament .”It is my fervent prayer that God will continue to protect you and your family, and also grant you wisdom to lead Oyo State to the next level.”
