Egypt captain opposes teammate’s expulsion

Egypt’s skipper Ahmed Elmohamady has defended Amr Warda following the sexual harassment allegations made against the winger.

The Aston Villa fullback captained Egypt as they beat DR Congo 2-0 to reach the round of 16 of the 2019 AFCON.

Elmohamady gave Egypt the lead after 25 minutes, before Mohamed Salah secured the win with a composed finish, two minutes before the half-time whistle.

Just hours before the game, Amr Warda was expelled from the national team squad after getting involved in a series of online sexual harassment allegations.

The reason behind the EFA’s decision is that they wanted to maintain discipline and commitment within the team according to their statement.

However, Elmohamady disagrees with the EFA’s decision as he defended Warda following the backlash the Atromitos’ winger had received.

“Amr Warda is one of us and we all make mistakes. We will not leave Warda alone,” Elmohamady told Time Sports after the game.

“Warda represented Egypt on many occasions before, and what we should do is to stand by him.

“We always give things more attention than they deserve. What happened is personal freedom and every player is free with his personal life as long as it doesn’t interfere with his job on the pitch.

“No player should be held accountable for anything done outside the pitch. We support Amr Warda,” he added.

Mahmoud Trezeguet, who was named MOTM against DR Congo, has also revealed his sympathy for Amr Warda.
