All Local Government Chairmen’s Cup, tagged “ALGON CUP 2016”, an inter-secondary school tournament has commenced in Ekiti State.
The football competition is targetted at talent discovery among secondary school students in all the local governments in the state and is also meant for future development of the youths.
The chairman, Ekiti Football Association, Mr. Ayodeji Desmond Alabi, told newsmen on Monday at the kick-off of the competition, that it was simply “an agenda for youth development in Ekiti.”
Alabi called on the people of the state to celebrate talents discovered in Ekiti State, especially Sunday Alimi, who played in the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
The FA chairman commended the Phoenix Athletics Sports Club, the organisers of the competition, for going back to the grass roots to discover talents.
Chief Executive Officer of Phoenix Athletics Sports Club, Mr. Bayo Olanlege, said football should be used to develop the youths, adding “it is time to create a solid base for them in the state.”
According to him, “in sports the youths are happy, a player is developed, nurtured and he makes his money for life”, saying “those in charge of youth development should create a system and structure for the youths to grow and achieve their aims and objectives through sports.”
The CEO added that the group had been able to identify that sports must move forward in Ekiti State and in the right direction because of the homogeneity of the state, hence the ALGON CUP 2016.
Mr Olanlege told the gathering that the competition would attract donations of sports equipment to the champions in the names of their schools and consolation prizes will be awarded.
While speaking at the ceremony, the chairman of Gbonyin Local Government area and the P.R.O of ALGON in Ekiti State, Mrs. Shade Akinrinmola, commended the organisers of the competition youth development and promise her local government’s support for sports development in the coming year.
She described Phoenix Athletics Sports Club CEO, as a focus man in football development.
Also, the Executive Secretary, Nationwide League, NWL, Mr. Sola Ogunnowo, described the ALGON Cup as part of the NFF agenda in developing the youths in the country.
He assured that NFF and NWL will support the football events to succeed, putting it on record that Ekiti State now has five football clubs in the league from their past records.
The competition which started on Monday, will end December 21. Winners in each local government of the state will now face each other at the state level in January 2017.
