Elephant Girls lift Oguche Basketball tourney

FirstBank women’s Basketball team, the Elephant Girls proved once again that they are a team reckoned with in the Nigerian basketball circle following their victory last week over hard fighting MFM Queens in the final of Sam Oguche Basketball competition.

The Bankers outplayed the Olukoya Queens 52-40 in a contested encounter decided at the indoor sports hall of the National Stadium, Lagos.

The former African women’s champions dominated their opponents in the first quarter by 16-6. The second quarter saw the Bankers consolidate their hold on the lead with a 28-14 scoreline.

Though the MFM Queens fought back in the third quarter, but their resolve had little or no effect as the Bankers held on to their lead till the final whistle.

Boosted by their teeming fans in the fourth quarter, the Elephant Girls proved to be of the best women’s teams on the continent as they finished the game 52-40.

An elated coach of the Bankers, Lateef Erinfolami, speaking after the game said: “It was a good game. The girls were determined to excel and that was why they dominated from beginning to end. I will continue to encourage them [players] to
work harder. This is just the beginning as far as we are concerned.”

Meanwhile, there are indications that the Bankers would also replicate their victory runs in the ongoing Dr. D.K Olukoya Basketball tournament at the National Stadium, Lagos.
