Enoh presents medals to October Pitstop Lagos criterium winners

Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, on Sunday, presented medals to winners of the October edition of the Pitstop monthly criterium, as he reiterated his focus on the development of sports at the grassroots level.

Enoh, while speaking after the cycling race organised by PitStop Lagos Community, stated that the sports ministry wants to revolutionise sports in Nigeria.

“Our focus is on grassroots sports development. We are focused on trying to see how much we can do to get our young men and women that are largely in the grassroots and are talented and determined, appreciated and assured of a future for them.

“The focus is trying to see how we can get a quick fix of sporting facilities in the grassroots, so that the talented ones can showcase what they do, and we can lead them on and transition them to compete for themselves and for our country. And overall, to see how we can create and achieve a sports revolution in our country,” he said.

Enoh, who commended the PitStop Lagos Community for its input in cycling, assured of his support for the cycling communities and the federation at large, and promised to encourage private sports initiatives by making himself available and accessible as a minister.

Speaking on behalf of the community, General Manager, PitStop Lagos, Mr Opeyemi Adegboro, noted that the objective of the criterium is to raise cyclists that are ever ready for competitions, develop grassroots cycling and produce professional cyclists.

According to Adegboro, “at PitStop Lagos Community, we are developing grassroots cycling, we are giving the cyclists opportunity for consistent earning, of which at this event, there’s something to win for the first 15 participants in this race. The prize for the winner is N250,000; the prize for the second position is N150,000, with the third winning N100,00, while the fourth and fifth positions cart home N50,000 and N40,000 respectively. And for the team that won, they’ll be getting $1000.”

While appreciating the minister for gracing the event, Adegboro pledged to support the current administration in achieving its focus on developing sports at the grassroots level.

Sponsored by Access Bank, Craneburg and Ilubirin, the criterium was attended by teenage, ladies, professional cyclists and recreational riders, who engaged in the 15-loop race of about 36km at the Dolphin estate loop, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Winner of the race, Isaac Gana, who is also the coach of the PitStop cycling academy, expressed joy for his victory; noting that it was his first win at the monthly criterium.
