EPL: Liverpool begin title defence against Bournemouth

The 2025-26 English Premier League season kicks off tonight with Anthony Taylor as centre referee, as reigning champions Liverpool host Bournemouth at Anfield.

Unarguably, all eyes will be on Mohamed Salah, who has made it a tradition of scoring in the EPL opener since the 2017 season, except in the 2023 season.

Recall that Salah in the 2024/25 season set a Premier League record when he scored to make it 2-0 in the opening clash with Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

The Egyptian talisman now leads with nine goals and with record 14 assists on the opening weekend of the Premier League campaign than any other player.

Salah leads the EPL opening goal chart ahead of Frank Lampard (eight goals), Wayne Rooney (eight goals), Alan Shearer (eight goals), Jamie Vardy (eight goals), Teddy Sheringham (seven goals) and Sergio Aguero also with seven goals.

Salah last season also won the Premier League Golden Boot with 29 goals as well as the Playmaker of the Season award, while the 32-year-old forward also broke the record for the most combined goals and assists in a 38-game season.

Manager Arne Slot in his debut season, led Liverpool to win the English top-flight last season, as he banks on Salah with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez, among others to retain the title this season.

The Reds have new signings in the likes of Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz, and Giovanni Leoni from Parma, among others, to ensure a good start to the season.

Interestingly, Kerkez, will be facing his former club, Bournemouth, tonight, as the Cherries would also parade defender Bafode Diakite from Lille and goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic from Chelsea, among other new summer signings at Anfield.
