Ethiopians Habtamu Birhane Molla and Shewaye Dueo Tolosa have emerged winners of the Yenagoa City International 10km Race in the male and female categories, respectively.
While Molla won with a time of 33:50.07, Tolosa beat all comers in the female category with an impressive time of 29:23.62, and both pocketed $5,000 each.
Nigeria’s Gang James finished second in 29:59.90, while Francis James secured third place in 30:16.71 in the male category. In the female category, Tigist Girma Aseta placed second in 34:07.25, and Worke Gacasho Jilo finished third in 34:57.72.
The second and third placed winners were rewarded with $3,000 and $2,000 in that order.
Speaking after the race, the SA Media, Office of the Director General, National Sports Commission (NSC), Kola Daniel, lauded the Commission’s Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko and the DG Bukola Olopade, saying the combination is a “Midas touch” driving a new era of growth and transformation in Nigerian sports noting that their efforts align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Bayelsa State governor, Douye Diri, who was represented by his deputy, Dr Peter Akpe, in his goodwill message, described the race as a major milestone in the state’s sporting journey, reiterating the government’s commitment to sports development as far as youths are concerned.
Also speaking, Mrs Yetunde Olopade of Nilayo Sports Management said the historic race represented a defining moment in the evolution of road racing in Nigeria.
