Bayern Munich midfielder saw off competition from Manchester United ace to lift top youngster award
RENATO SANCHES has won the 2016 European Golden Boy award, according to reports.
The Bayern Munich ace was up against Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford and club teammate Kingsley Coman, but Tuttosport claims he will scoop the prize at an official awards ceremony this evening.
Sanches only broke into Benfica’s first team last season and was handed a contract until 2021 as he made 35 appearances in all competitions.
The 19-year-old was strongly linked with a move to the Red Devils but eventually opted for Bayern as the Bundesliga champions agreed a £30million deal which could rise to a staggering £70m.
Sanches then made history as he played a key role in Portugual’s historic Euro 2016 win, breaking numerous records due to his age in the process.
Sanches now replaces Anthony Martial as the new European Golden Boy, but Rashford is sure to be disappointed after a stellar year at Old Trafford.
The forward is United’s new saviour after being handed a chance under Louis van Gaal, and was a shock inclusion in England’s Euro squad.
It hasn’t even been a year since Rashford made his professional debut but he is sure to be in the running again next season if he continues to thrive.
Meanwhile, Coman has seriously impressed since joining Bayern on a two-year loan deal from Juventus, and Carlo Ancelotti is expected to make the switch permanent next summer.
