FA Chief: Arsene Wenger would be perfect England manager

FA CHIEF Martin Glenn has admitted Arsene Wenger has the ‘perfect criteria’ to be England manager.

The Three Lions are looking for a permanent boss after Sam Allardyce left his post on Tuesday following an undercover newspaper investigation.

Gareth Southagate has been put in charge for the next four games but Wenger is many people’s favourite to land the role when his Arsenal contract expires in the summer.

He has kept quiet on the talk but Glenn says he is exactly the kind of person they are after.

He said: “Yes, Arsene Wenger will be out of contract at the end of the season. Of course he’d fit the criteria perfectly. So would a few others.

“The criteria won’t change, it wasn’t wrong before.

“You don’t have to be wedded to the fact he has to be English, that narrows the field too far.

“We want the best person for the job. Being English is a bonus.

“Premier League experience would be preferable. If you look at the track record of successful international managers they are usually older.

“It doesn’t mean they have to be. The average age of a successful manager is probably in their 60s.”

Asked if the FA were prepared to wait until the end of the season, Glenn said: “We want to get the right person.”
