James Maddison’s fine late strike saw Leicester come from behind to beat Tottenham 2-1 in a game filled with more VAR drama.

Maddison’s powerful 25-yard effort settled a wonderful game of twists and turns at the King Power Stadium, which saw Spurs surrender the lead for the third time in four games.

Leicester thought they had scored the opener when Wilfred Ndidi bundled home after Paulo Gazzaniga’s fumble, but VAR ruled it out for an offside, and minutes later Harry Kane put Spurs ahead with a superb finish, somehow hooking the ball past Kasper Schmeichel while falling to the ground from Caglar Soyuncu’s shove.

After half-time, the visitors thought they had doubled their lead when Serge Aurier powered in a low effort from just outside the box before VAR again adjudged an offside in the build-up, and moments later Leicester equalised when Ricardo Pereira fired in a loose ball from 12 yards.

Both sides had enjoyed plenty of opportunities in a game which still threatened to go either way – but a moment of magic from Maddison would end up defining it, beating Gazzaniga from 25 yards with a fine finish five minutes from time.

Callum Hudson-Odoi has signed a new five-year contract with Chelsea that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2024, the Premier League club said on Thursday.

Hudson-Odoi’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of the season and he was heavily linked with German champions, Bayern Munich, whose interest in the 18-year-old was rejected by Chelsea earlier this year.

“Callum Hudson-Odoi has committed himself to Chelsea Football Club by signing a new five-year contract,” the club said in a statement.

“His new deal commits him to the club he has trained at since the age of eight until at least 2024.”

Hudson-Odoi, who made his senior England debut in a Euro 2020 qualifier March, is recovering from an Achilles injury he suffered in April.

“It’s been a long wait but it’s done now and I’m really happy about that. I’ve been a Chelsea player since I was eight and this is the right club for me to be,” he said.

The Brazilian Football Confederation have confirmed that national team boss Tite will tomorrow announce his roster for the upcoming friendlies against Nigeria and Senegal.

From 1030 hours, in the auditorium of the entity, Brazil’s senior, Olympic Team and U17 coaches will unveil their squad lists for international matches in October.

While Brazil are facing the Senegalese for the first time, the Selecao thrashed the Super Eagles 3-0 in a friendly back in 2003, with goals from Gil, Luis Fabiano and Adriano.

The Brazil vs Nigeria friendly will take place in Singapore’s National Stadium on October 13.

One Brazil player who is certain to miss the trip to Southeast Asia is first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

The Liverpool glovesman suffered a serious calf injury on the opening day of the season against Norwich City and has been on the sidelines since then.

Brazil have lost only three games since the appointment of Tite as coach in 2016, against Belgium in the 2018 World Cup, Argentina and Peru.

Roger Federer will not be rushing into any decision on whether he will participate at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Now that Roger Federer is 38 years old, he has to preserve his condition and look after his body more than ever.

While he is showing no signs of slowing down, the reality is that these could be his final few years on the tennis court.

With Rafael Nadal just one behind his Grand Slam record of 20, the world No 3 is going to have to give his all to win a Major in 2020 to try and restore a cushion.

Next year also sees the Olympic Games return in Tokyo and Federer is already being asked whether he will be present in Japan for one last swansong.

But considering the Games take place from the end of July, there is a good chance it could interfere with his plans for Wimbledon, a tournament he will want to play with no distractions.

However, there are also three other reasons as to why he is hesitating over the chance to represent Switzerland once again.

‘It’s that I don’t know if I’m going to be playing there just because it’s still a year away,” he said.

“Even though the time is slowly coming around for me, in my mind, my team, my family, to find out what’s the best schedule after Wimbledon next year?

ALSO READ: Younger players not as talented like myself, Nadal ―Federer

“Then I for sure meant also I don’t know exactly the requirements, what it takes with wildcards at the Olympics all that stuff, as the Davis Cup format also changed, and all that stuff.”

Federer is yet to win a gold in the men’s singles, but picked up the accolade in the doubles at Beijing 2008.

He also has a Davis Cup winner’s medal from 2014 meaning the only thing missing from his incredible collection of titles is the Olympic singles gold.

He is not putting any further pressure on himself though.

Nigeria’s D’Tigers have moved 10 places up in the recently-released FIBA Men World Rankings presented by Nike on Thursday.

According to FIBA, the rankings were updated following the conclusion of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 in China.

The US maintained their top-ranked status but the newly-crowned World Cup champions Spain closing in the gap.

Nigeria’s qualification to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was also instrumental to her recent 23rd spot from a 33rd position earlier, further earning the first spot in the continent.

Meanwhile, there was significant movement at the top end of the ranking, with Australia (673.6) climbing to third place.

They leapfrogged the fourth-ranked Argentina (670.5) and fifth-placed France (665.4) in the process.

Coming into the World Cup as the 11th ranked team, Australia received extra points for beating higher-ranked teams in France and Lithuania.

This was on their way to their best-ever performance at the flagship event.

World Cup runners-up Argentina also moved up a spot at the expense of France.

The French’s overall points tally did increase at the World Cup, but they were not enough to compensate for the gains made by Australia and Argentina.

Czech Republic (596.8) and Poland (583.0) were among the highest risers, with their strong showings at the World Cup reflecting in the newly-updated ranking.

The Czechs climbed 14 places and are now 10th, while the Poles jumped to 13th place, having gained 12 positions.

The trajectory is also pointing up for some other World Cup participants, as Nigeria, Tunisia, Jordan, Japan, Cote d’Ivoire registered double-digit gains.

However, the countries losing ground were those not present at the 32-team tournament in China.

The FIBA World Ranking for Men, presented by NIKE, will next be updated following February’s Continental Cup Qualifiers.

Interim head coach of the Super Falcons, Christopher Danjuma, has named Asisat Oshoala as the team’s new captain, replacing Desire Oparanozie who was appointed by the gaffer, Thomas Dennerby.

This is coming just 24 hours after Sports Minister Sunday Dare waded into the saga between Dennerby and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), after the Swede threatened to quit due to interference.

Danjuma announced a change of captainship with the backing of the nation’s football house on Tuesday evening a few hours after the sports minister, Mr Sunday Dare, visited the team in the morning.

The coach failed to name an assistant for Oshoala, who will not be available for the qualifiers preparations until after the Barcelona clash with Sevilla on September 29.

In 2015, a Women’s World Cup in Canada fallout saw coach Edwin Okon replaced by his then assistant Danjuma – a situation that eventually cost Nigeria a qualification ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympics.

It will be recalled that Barcelona player Oshoala, captained the Super Falcons early this month in their last Tokyo 2020 qualifier at the Agege Stadium, Lagos, where Nigeria defeated Algeria 1-0 to advance 3-0 on aggregate.

Nigeria are seeking to make a return to the Olympic’s Women’s tournament for the first time in 12 years by securing a qualification ticket to Tokyo next year.

The Super Falcons will travel to Abidjan to face the Elephants on October 2 before welcoming them for the reserve fixture in Lagos on October 6.

Ex international, Friday Ekpo has berated the statement made by Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr that the team doesn’t have any goalkeeping problems.

Rohr last week was quick to note that Nigeria’s goalkeeping issue has been laid to rest due to the performance of Super Eagles goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, in the team’s friendly against Ukraine in an international friendly.

The 1992 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) bronze winner, Ekpo, stated that for a team to be solid there must be competition amongst players and goalkeepers regardless of who is in-form at the moment.

He said that the commendation should have been made by the goalkeeper training, Alloy Agu and not Rohr.

“I don’t see the reason why Rohr should be coming out to the press to say that the Super Eagles don’t have goalkeeping issues again based on Uzoho’s performance in the Ukraine friendly.

“This statement will not encourage other goalkeepers in the team to be at their best when in camp. For a national team to be solid, there must be continuous competition among players and keepers.

“When a goalkeeper believes that his other colleagues are equally good like him, he will work extra hard to keep his number one shirt… this also goes to players.

“If you want to look at it from another perspective, Alloy Agu, who is the Super Eagles goalkeepers’ trainer, is the person that has the right to acknowledge the quality of a goalkeeper, not Rohr.

“All that football-loving Nigerians need is a continuous quality performance from all departments of the Super Eagles. We need more results than words,” the former Shell FC of Gabon midfielder said.
