For many years, elite managers have been judged not only on their tactical blueprint, but the ultimate metric of their managerial greatness remains the number of trophies they harvest.

Recently, Manchester City football club bade the gaffer, Pep Guardiola, farewell in what truly highlights the beautiful send-off in the club’s history. Pep Guardiola not only made history at Manchester City but also changed the entire game in the Premier League.

However, beyond the style, tactical and man-management, Guardiola’s successful career could also be linked to the number of trophies he amassed.

In this article, Sporting Tribune writes about five coaches with the most trophies across all competitions in history.

Sir Alex Ferguson: 49 trophies

At the absolute summit of managerial achievement sits Sir Alex Ferguson. The Scotsman’s 49-trophy haul is a monument to tactical evolution and psychological mastery.

Before establishing a 26-year hegemony at Old Trafford, Ferguson shattered the Old Firm duopoly in Scotland, guiding Aberdeen to three Scottish Premier Division titles and famously toppling Real Madrid in the 1983 European Cup Winners’ Cup final.

Pep Guardiola: 40 trophies

No modern manager has pressured the historical leaderboards quite like Pep Guardiola. Since deploying his Positional Play at Barcelona in 2008, the Catalan has accumulated silverware at a historic clip.

He also managed Bayern Munich and recently resigned from Manchester City, a club he coached for ten years and delivered 20 trophies for them.

Mircea Lucescu: 35 trophies

Lucescu built a powerhouse at Shakhtar Donetsk. Blending defensive tactical discipline with explosive Brazilian flair, the Romanian tactician secured 22 trophies with Shakhtar, highlighted by the 2009 UEFA Cup, proving that elite managerial philosophies transcend traditional footballing borders.

Lobanovskyi: 33 trophies

Lobanovskyi approached football as a system of binary equations, pioneering high-pressure, data-driven physical conditioning and fluid positional interchange decades before they became global standards. His 33 trophies spanned the Soviet and Ukrainian eras, alongside continental triumphs in the Cup Winners’ Cup.

Carlo Ancelotti: 31 trophies

Carlo Ancelotti is the only manager to win 11 UEFA competition titles and league titles in all of Europe’s top five leagues. Ancelotti operates in a stratum of his own when it comes to the European Cup.

Don Carlo is the only manager to hoist the UEFA Champions League trophy five times: twice with AC Milan and three times with Real Madrid.
