‘Mundo Deportivo’ and ‘Gazzetta dello Sport’ claim that the new tournament will be played in June every four years and will replace the Confederations Cup.
24 teams will participate in the competition and will qualify through their confederation tournaments. For example, European qualifiers will come through the Champions League.
In principle, there would be 12 European clubs, five South American, two African, two Asian and two North American. A solution is also being sought for Oceania to have a representative.
The teams would be distributed into eight groups of three, with the winners of each group reaching the knockout stages.
It remains to be seen whether the sew system will affect the current Club World Cup, which takes place at the end of the season.
