Germany forward Sanders score the only goal against Falconets in the U-20 World Cup in France.
Nigeria’s Falconets on Monday slumped 1-0 to Germany in their opening Group D game of the 2018 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup played at the Stade de Marville, Saint-Malo, France.
Three-time world champions, Germany went ahead in the 69th minute, when Stefanie Sanders tucked away a rebound off a corner kick past goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
But minutes later, Peace Efih saw her goal-bound effort crash against the post with the entire German defence well beaten.
Nigeria’s keeper Nnadozie was outstanding as she pulled off several saves especially in the second half as the Germans piled on the pressure.
Star player and leading scorer in the qualifiers Rasheedat Ajibade had a seemingly poor outing this time.
Ajibade however, through social media expressed hope the Falconets would make use of the positives from the result of the match.
The FC Robo forward tweeted, “Disappointing result today against a good team but feel proud of our team and lots of positives to take into the next game. Thank you for all the great support. We go again on Thursday#Togetherwearestronger #RA08 #U20WWC #womeninfootball.
Meanwhile, Super Falcons star, Desire Oparanoize, who watched the game from the stands also urged the Falconets to remain focused despite the defeat.
“Good game ladies. Wasn’t the result we hoped for, but of course…lots of room for improvement. Thursday will surely be a better date. Heads up @ Stade Marville,” Oparanozie tweeted.
The Chris Danjuma-tutored Falconets would have the opportunity to take their qualification dream back on track on Thursday when they face Haiti at the same venue.
Haiti had in the second group D game played also on Monday lost 1-4 to China.
