FIFA Women’s World Cup: France beat Nigeria 1-0

Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Monday night in Rennes put up a superlative performance but at the end lost 0-1 to the hosts, Les Bleues of France, in their last group A game of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The heroine of the match perhaps turned out to be Nigeria’s goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who made a number of saves to keep her team in the game up till the second half.

The goalless situation remained until in the 79th minute when Ngozi Ebere was believed to have brought down a lurking French player in the box.

Centre referee, Melissa Borjas from Honduras after resorting to the VAR to award a penalty kick to France, also issued a red card to Ebere for her second booking in the match.

Wendie Renard had to retake the spot kick after losing the first kick as keeper Nnadozie was issued a yellow card for stepping out of the goalline before the kick.

She was however, beaten by Renard in the second kick to give the hosts win and nine points as clear leaders of the group.

Meanwhile, Norway finished second in the group with six points following a 2-1 win over Korea also on Monday night.
