Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has officially kicked off the much-anticipated 2025 Governor’s Cup after ten years in limbo.
The official kick-off at the FCE Football Pitch, Yola, on Sunday, marks the return of the prestigious competition that has produced great talent from the state after a decade.
Representing the governor at the event, the Chief of Staff, Government House, Dr Edgar Amos, urged all 21 participating local government teams to compete fairly and abide by the competition’s rules and regulations.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to youth empowerment, particularly in sports and entrepreneurship development.
The opening ceremony was attended by members of the State Executive Council, local government chairmen, and football enthusiasts from across the state.
Speaking at the event, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Barrister Wali Yakubu, and the ALGON Chairman, Suleiman Gangkuba, commended Governor Fintiri for reviving the Governor’s Cup, which had been abandoned by previous administrations.
They described the tournament as a vital platform for youth engagement and talent development.
Also speaking to journalists, President of Nigeria Volleyball Federation and Confederation of Africa Beach Volleyball, Engineer Nimrod Musa commended the governor for having the development of youths at heart.
Noting that this competition will help in return the loss of glory in sports by the state.
He also commended the sporting facilities now in the state, particularly the soon-to-be-commissioned stadium along Numan road and mini stadia across the state.
The number one Volleyball administrator in Nigeria also promised to set up sports academics in all senatorial districts in the state.
While calling on well-to-do individuals to support youths and sports development noted that the government alone can not do it but with support from individuals, and organizations.
Engineer Nimrod commended ALGON for their support in ensuring that Governor returns, he urged them to make it an annual affair.
A thrilling opening match, between the Yola North football club and the Guyuk Local Government football team ended 1-0 in favor of the host local government council Yola North.
The week-long tournament is expected to revitalise football activities state and it’s expected to serve as a springboard for young football talents.
