Firmino blow as Klopp confirms injury diagnosis

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has explained the serious injury that was suffered by Roberto Firmino during their Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old forward came on at half-time of their eventual 2-0 victory, but lasted just over 30 minutes being withdrawn – and the extent of his injury was worse than previously hoped.

Klopp said on Friday: “Bobby is not good news with a serious hamstring injury, really unfortunate.

“We don’t know exactly how long he will be out but it will be not now after the international break directly. We have to work on that.”

Adding: “We are talking weeks, still. More than four. I’d consider that a serious injury.”

The Reds take on West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday, and will also be without midfielder Curtis Jones and defender Joe Gomez as they look to close the gap on leaders Chelsea.

Klopp’s updates on both Jones and Gomez were more positive than their Brazilian team-mate, with the English stars both close to first-team action.

Klopp continued: “Curtis is a completely different story (to Firmino), he was very unlucky in training – he got a finger that scratched the eye.

“I had a lot of injuries to players in my career, that was not involved. He is on the way back but we have to see how long exactly.

“He will be back after the international break, for sure, but in the international break we have to see when he can start doing proper stuff again.

“And Joey, hopefully after the international break as well.”
