Former African boxing champion, Fatai Ayinla, is dead

FORMER African champion and national boxing coach, Fatai Ayinla, is dead.

Ayinla died on Wednesday during an undisclosed illness at the age of 78. According to a source close to the family, Ayinla had been battling with the ailment for quite some time. He will be buried on Thursday, October 13, at his residence, Aba Onde, Soka area, off Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at 12noon.

The late boxer, who hailed from Ibadan, retired as chief boxing coach from the Oyo State Sports Council and rose to the post of an Assistant Director while in service.

He represented Nigeria at the world boxing championships on a number of occasions and won many laurels. He also won a CommonWealth gold medal.
