Former Nigeria defender Uwe gets new coaching job in Germany

FORMER Nigeria defender Andrew Uwe has been appointed coach of German football side BV Essen. Uwe, a member of the Nigeria team to the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, will take charge of the club in the new season.

Before his new appointment, the captain of the Nigeria Flying Eagles team to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 1985 had coached teams like JFV Nordwest and FC Wittsfeld 01.

Speaking to Tribunesport by phone from his base in Germany on Tuesday, the former Leventis United FC of Ibadan player said: “Yes, I am happy with this new development. I signed the contract on Saturday and I will be starting with the club on July 18. Already, everything is set and I have all the schedules. The contract is for one year in the first instance with an automatic extension after six months.”

Following his career stints in the United States and Germany, the former VfB Oldenburg player has over the years bagged a number of coaching licences which qualify him to coach different categories of football clubs. Some of the licences include the UEFA B licence, the German C and B licences.
