Freiburg stuns Bayern Munich with late penalty in DFB-Pokal quarter-finals

Freiburg pulled off a shocking 2-1 victory against Bayern Munich on Wednesday,  in the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals with a last-gasp penalty from Lucas Holer.

The result ends Bayern’s hopes for a domestic double as Thomas Tuchel’s team misses out on both Bundesliga and Pokal glory.

The match was evenly poised until Dayot Upamecano’s header put Bayern ahead in the 19th minute. However, the hosts responded quickly, with Nicolas Hofler’s excellent volley finding the back of the net just eight minutes later.

In the second half, Bayern intensified their attack, with Benjamin Pavard crashing a header against the crossbar. However, they failed to find an answer, and a rare Freiburg counter caught Jamal Musiala’s raised arm, resulting in a game-winning penalty for Freiburg. Holer stepped up to strike home from the spot as Yann Sommer went the wrong way.

The win sends Christian Streich’s side to the last four of the DFB-Pokal and marks a significant upset against the reigning Bundesliga champions.

For Tuchel, who had only just replaced Julian Nagelsmann, it is a disappointing result that ends his team’s chances for a domestic double.

The victory for Freiburg was well-deserved as they had looked the stronger of the two teams throughout the match, with their early dominance being rewarded with an equaliser in the first half.
