Gbaramatu soccer tourney produces 22 talents

No fewer than 22 fresh football talents were discovered at the weekend during the 2017 edition of the annual Peace and Unity Cup football competition among communities in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.

Organiser of the football competition and Chairman of Kokodiagbene community, Comrade Sheriff Mulade, said it was meant to entrench love, peace and communality among the communities.

A total of 12 communities, including Kokodiagbene, Oporoza, Kurutie and Tebujor participated in this year’s competition.

The final of this years’ edition featured between Tebujor community and Kurutie community and was held at Kokodiagbene community.

Tebujor community defeated Kurutie by a lone goal scored by one Osomo Fredrick in the 50th minute and went home with N500, 000.00, while Kurutie received N300, 000.00.

Kokodiagbene, 2nd runner up got N200, 000.00, just as other participants got consolation prizes.

Meanwhile, Comrade Mulade assured that the competition would be sustained in the years ahead, noting that 22 players had been identified for camping following their exploits in the 2017 edition.

He solicited the sponsorship of government, well-to-do individuals and corporate bodies to enable the annual soccer fiesta grow and serve as a veritable tool for football development in the coastal communities notorious for wrong reasons.

Delta State Deputy Governor, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro, who was the special guest of honour at the event, commended Comrade Mulade for organizing the annual tournament.

He appealed to individuals and corporate bodies to sponsor subsequent editions of the championship due to its bridge-building potential among different ethnic nationalities.

Dignitaries at the event included: the member representing Warri Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Hon. Daniel Oritsegbubemi Reyenieju, former Chairman of Warri South-West Local Government and DG, Security Matters, Delta State, Hon. David Tonwe and immediate past Warri South-West Chairman, Hon. George Ekpemupolo.

Others were Elder Kuejubola Onajite, Godfrey Esu, former International, Edema Fuludu, Bauldwin Bazuaye, Kenneth Nwaomucha, Warri South PDP Chairmanship candidate, Comrade Michael Tidi and Chairman of Kurutie Community, Apostle Monday Torusei.
