Steven Gerrard paid credit to Jurgen Klopp for his tactics after Liverpool FC were 3-0 winners against Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash at Anfield.
The Reds are the only Premier League team to have beaten Manchester City in the English top flight this season following a 4-3 victory over the runaway leaders at Anfield back in February.
Liverpool FC made the breakthrough in the first half thanks to Mohamed Salah’s close range finish in the 12th minute following Roberto Firmino’s tenacious work to dispossess Kyle Walker.
The Merseyside outfit doubled their lead eight minutes later when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fired a powerful shot past Ederson from outside the Manchester City goalkeeper’s area to make it 2-0.
The Reds polished off a dominant first-half performance when Sadio Mane nodded home from close range following Salah’s impressive cross to put Liverpool FC in command of the first leg.
Former Liverpool FC captain Gerrard credited Klopp’s tactics following the Reds’ dominant performance at Anfield.
“Sensational,” Gerrard told BT Sport.
“Liverpool have been excellent in possession and out of possession. You’ve got to give Jurgen Klopp credit for having the audacity to take the game to City with the game plan and then to be so organised out of possession. He got it spot in.”
Liverpool FC are in third place in the Premier League table and 18 points behind Manchester City in the Premier League table.
The Reds are looking to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2008.
