Ghana appoint Carlos Queiroz as coach

Former Manchester United assistant manager, Carlos Queiroz, has been appointed as Ghana’s head coach for the upcoming World Cup.

The 73-year-old Portuguese has replaced Otto Addo, who was sacked on 31 March after friendly defeats by Germany and Austria.

The Black Stars, who are in the same World Cup group as England, also failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations under Addo.

Queiroz had two spells as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Old Trafford, first from 2002-2003 and then from 2004-2008, either side of a stint as Real Madrid head coach.

He was most recently in charge of Oman but left the role last month after they failed to qualify for the World Cup.

“I accept this mission with the same passion and commitment that have guided me throughout my career,” Queiroz said.

“Ghana is a nation of talent, pride, and footballing soul. I arrive with respect for its history and belief in its future.”

Mozambique-born Queiroz led Portugal to the last 16 at the 2010 World Cup and has coached Iran at the past three editions of the tournament.

Queiroz has also held coaching positions with Egypt, Japan, Colombia, and South Africa, and previously led Portugal in the early 1990s.

Ghana play their first World Cup match in Group L against Panama on 17 June before fixtures against England and Croatia on 23 June and 27 June respectively.

This summer’s tournament is being co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico.
