Bayelsa State governor, Douye Diri, has commended the Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, for his remarkable turnaround of the Institute since his assumption of duties in May 2025.
Diri, who declared the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Extraordinary General Assembly, in Yenagoa, on Monday, said the NIS helmsman has displayed his administrative and leadership qualities by breathing new life and bringing rapid transformation into a hitherto neglected Institute in less than a year in office.
“Nigeria has never had it this good in sports administration. The NIS was hardly known before now, but within a short period, Comrade Philip Shaibu has redefined its relevance and impact,” Diri said.
The governor, however, charged other sports administrators and political appointees of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to emulate Shaibu’s visionary leadership and commitment to reform.
Setting the tone for the business of the day, NFF President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau emphasised the importance of unity and progressive reforms in Nigerian football. There is a great optimism that the resolutions reached will strengthen governance structures and chart a new course for the development of football in Nigeria.
