GWR fight: Bash Ali seeks Tinubu’s support

World boxing champion, Bash Ali, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support his plan to stage the Guinness World Record (GWR) as the oldest boxer to engage in professional boxing anywhere in the world.

The 68-year-old champion made the appeal during a world press conference which was held on Wednesday in Abuja. He said, the fight, if approved by the President, and staged in Nigeria, will be of economic importance as the country will benefit greatly dollar-wise.

He stated despite the frustration and impediment he has encountered in bringing the fight into reality, he would not give up as his love for his fatherland has kept him going and he will not relent.

He added that he rejected a €75m offer to stage the world record bout in Saudi Arabia or Germany saying as a patriotic Nigerian, he prefers that the fight is staged in Nigeria thus contributing to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

“I call on the Nigeria government particularly the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu to give total support for the fight for the Guinness World Boxing Champion to hold in Nigeria. I am not asking the government for money but their approval and total support to hold the bout in Nigeria and if this is done, then, I can singlehandedly (through the fight) get the country not less than $20 million dollars because the pay per view revenue will be paid to into the purse of the government.

“The Federal Government had in 2006, 2007, 2014 and May 21, 2019, inaugurated the Bash Ali Boxing Project Local Organizing Committee with the office of the Chief of Staff to the President as a member and the private sector providing the funds for the historic event. Unfortunately, the event could not hold to date.

“I would have taken the fight to Saudi Arabia or Germany who are ready to pay €75m but I want to stage the fight in Nigeria because of the love I have for this great nation.”

Ali is aiming to become the oldest boxer in the world to engage in a professional fight and make history by having his name written in the Guinness World Record book.
