Henry Nwosu (MON), has been battling with ill-health for sometime now, and needs financial assistance to overcome the ailment which has cost him about N4million.
Chairman, Professional Football Association of Nigeria (PFAN) Task Force, Harrison Jalla, in a social media post lamented that, Nwosu, a member of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning squad urgently needs help to survive.
“Nwosu is down with an ailment that requires urgent medical attention. His speech is already blurred.
“This is a clarion call to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, government of Imo State and all Nigerians of goodwill to rally round Nwosu to save his life.
“This is one of the reasons why the PFAN must get its proper representations in NFF, with its collective bargaining agreement in place to run its welfare programmes for current and retired footballers as an independent organisation,” Jalla stated.
The leadership of Imo Football Legend Club, has also raised the alarm over the health condition of Nwosu who happens to be the chairman of the Legend Club.
Vice chairman of Imo Football Legend, Mr Casmir Mbachu told Sportingtribune in Owerri on Monday that Nwosu has been sick for a couple of months now, saying the urgent attention of the Imo State government as well as well-meaning individuals will be needed to enable him to get adequate medi- cal treatment.
Mbachu, a former Iwuanyanwu Nationale player disclosed that Nwosu has managed his sickness alone in Owerri before his relatives took him to a hospital in Asaba, Delta State for intensive medical treatment through the effort of some members of the Imo Football Legend when the situation was getting out of hand.
He said that the Legend Club immediately informed Nwosu’s younger sister in Asaba of the worsening health condition of the former Racing Baffousam of Cameroon player.
Mbachu further disclosed that Nwosu and his family has so far sunk close to N4 million on the treatment of the former Golden Eaglets coach, adding the Football Legend Club has tried its best in assisting its chairman.
He said that a letter of financial support for Nwosu has been sent to the Imo State government in this regards, adding financial support has also been coming from members of the Legend Club including Etta Egbe and others living within and outside Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Imo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Dan Ogu, when contacted told Sportingtribune by phone that he only received the information today [Monday] when someone called to inform him.
Ogu stated that before now, the Imo State government was not aware of Nwosu’s plight, as he promised to inform the Governor [Hope Uzodimma] without delay, so that whatever assistance that would be given to Nwosu will be made available.
Recall Nwosu featured at the 1980, 1982, 1984 and 1988 AFCON editions, and will easily be remembered for the spectacular goal he scored against Cameroon in the final of Maroc ‘88 but which was overruled by the centre referee in the game Nigeria settled for the silver after a 0-1 defeat.
