UCL

History on Atletico’s side

Diego Simeone put the chances for both side’s of qualifying from the quarter-final at 50 percent, following Atletico Madrid’s 1-0 win over Leicester City.

His side do have the advantage, albeit a small one, but if history is anything to go by, the Foxes will find it very difficult to eliminate the Argentine’s side.

During his time in charge of the club, Atletico have played 21 home games in the Champions League and only three times previously would the result have been enough to send the tie to extra-time.

In the 2014/15 season, Atletico were beaten 1-0 in Germany by Bayer Leverkusen and 1-0 by Real Madrid at the quarter-final stage after advancing.

The other 18 of Atletico’s results in two-legged ties would be enough to see them reach the semi-final this time around, putting them in prime position to reach the final four.

Three results of the 18 stand out in that if they were repeated, Atletico would reach the next round despite being beaten.

Against Olympiacos away from home in the past they were beaten 3-2, while they have fallen to 2-1 losses against both Barcelona and Bayern Munich on the road in knockout competition.

If any of those results were repeated, they would reach the semi-final on the away goals rule.
