Home at last: Chelsea win Moses Caicedo transfer battle over Liverpool

Moisés Caicedo has completed a move from Brighton to Chelsea for a British record transfer fee of £115 million ($146m), the club announced on Monday.

The move puts an end to a months-long transfer saga, with Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino having labeled Caicedo as his No. 1 target this summer and saw the club’s opening bids rejected by Brighton.

However, Chelsea faced competition for his signature. On Friday, Liverpool broke ground and agreed to a £111m fee with Brighton — the first club to do so — only for the midfielder to reject a move to Anfield and instead indicating his desire to join Chelsea.

The 21-year-old midfielder has agreed an eight-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with a club option of a further year, and joins from Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

On completing his move to Chelsea, Caicedo said: “I am so happy to join Chelsea! I am so excited to be here at this big club and I didn’t have to think twice when Chelsea called me, I just knew I wanted to sign for the club. It’s a dream come true to be here and I can’t wait to get started with the team.”

“It’s a dream come true to be here and I can’t wait to get started with the team.”

Co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley said: ‘Moises has proved himself as a standout player in European football over the past 18 months, and we are thrilled to add him to Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.

“Moises possesses a rare midfield skill set and is a player we’ve been targeting for some time. We believe he will make a significant impact at Stamford Bridge this season and in the years ahead.”

Caicedo’s journey to Chelsea started in the Ecuadorian city of Santo Domingo. By the age of 13, he was playing for a regional select XI and was in the youth ranks of CD Espoli. He joined Independiente del Valle two years later.

Caicedo joined Brighton in February 2021 from the Ecuadorian team Independiente del Valle, where he had a productive time.He spent the first half of the following season on loan with Belgian outfit Beerschot.

He later made 53 appearances for Brighton across all leagues and became the most recent member of staff to transfer to Chelsea, joining former managers Graham Potter, Robert Sánchez, Marc Cucurella, and Sánchez.

Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital completed their purchase of Chelsea in May 2022, they have spent over $1 billion in player transfer fees. Chelsea’s acquisition of Caicedo brings that total to over $2 billion.
