I am not Arsenal’s scapegoat ―Ozil

Mesut Ozil is on the periphery at Arsenal and the German feels as though he’s blamed for things beyond his control, often made a scapegoat when things go wrong.

The World Cup winner has gone from being a key player to being completely forgotten in London under Unai Emery.

“If we don’t play well in a big game it’s always my fault,” he said in an interview with The Athletic.

“But if that’s true then how do you explain some of the bad results in games that I haven’t played?

“It makes no sense.”

Ozil is aware that more is expected of him at times, but he wants to remind everyone that there are ten other players on the pitch as well.

“I know that people expect me to give more and make the difference,” he explained, “but it’s not that simple.

“I’m not the only one. I’m a player for the team.

“Sometimes the rival is just better than us.”

Despite it not appearing as though he has a place at the Emirates, Ozil has no plans to leave.

“I have a contract until 2021 and I’ll stay until then,” he said.

“I can go through tough times, but there’s no reason to escape.”
