I wanted to punch Suarez during Liverpool match -Gyan

Legendary Ghanaian striker, Asamoah Gyan has disclosed that he once considered physically assaulting Luis Suarez during a match between Sunderland and Liverpool FC.

The former Sunderland player wanted to hit the Uruguayan superstar as payback for Ghana’s 2010 FIFA World Cup heartbreak during a Premier League encounter in the 2010/11 season.

Suarez, who handled a goal-bound Dominic Adiyiah header, conceded a red card and a penalty that Gyan struck against the woodwork during extra-time of a 2010 FIFA World Cup quarter-final match in South Africa.

Uruguay went on to progress to the semi-finals after winning the match 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the FNB Stadium and the Black Stars bowed out of the biggest sports event in the world.

“I remember a game between Sunderland and Liverpool. We were playing at home on that day and all players were shaking hands,” Gyan said on Football Ghana.

“I wanted to hit him [Suarez] because people had said things that stuck in my mind.

“I was naïve at that time but when I thought about it later, I realized that I had to let it go because I would have done the same thing if I was in his position.”

Ghana would have become the first African nation to reach the semi-final of the World Cup if they had defeated the South American side on the night.

The two nations have been pitted against each other in Group H which also features Portugal and South Korea at this year’s World Cup finals in Qatar.
