IAAF London 2017: Okagbare remains Nigeria’s surest medal hopeful ―Urhobo

Former president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Toni Urhobo has declared that Blessing Okagbare remains a medal hopeful for Nigeria at the ongoing 16th IAAF World Championships in London.

He told Tribunesport through a social media platform that the Commonwealth double sprint reigning champion holds the ace from the Team Nigeria squad, just as he noted that US-based Tobilola Amusan has what it takes to spring surprises in London.

“Blessing Okagbare is still our surest hope for a medal in the long jump event in particular. Tobi Amusan is a sure rising star to watch out for. This is a sure test ground for her. She [Amusan] looks ready for a season’s best performance in her event and with the help of her college coach, she could spring a surprise once in the finals of the 100m with a good start. No doubt, she is our best future medallist at the 2020 Japan Olympics,” said former Nigeria Athletics Chief Coach.

The 71-year-old sports administrator noted that Nigeria’s women athletes are also good for the podium in relays if they could get their act together.

“Depending on the quality of preparations, I guess our women athletes would most likely get to the finals in the 100m, long jump/I00m, 4x100m and 4x400m relays.

“With good baton exchange, our girls could fetch us a medal in either of the two relays. The chance more likely in the 4×400m.

“Bringing in Okagbare in the finals of the 4×400m relay could spring a surprise.

“Also, [Ese] Brume could be a surprise medallist in the long lump as well with the right coaching team,” said the former technical adviser of Benin Republic.  .
