No fewer than 30 golfers have so far registered for the maiden edition of the Senior Special (SS28) Golf Championship slated for this weekend at Ibadan Golf Club (IGC), Onireke, Ibadan.
Speaking at a press briefing, the organising committee headed by the second Vice Captain of the club, Mr Seyi Alaba, disclosed that the competition is for members playing 28 handicap in IGC.
The committee stated that the tourney will feature the likes of SS28 Ojay, Mishinn, Vsop, the celebrity golfer, Iron-bender, hulk hogan, Shigo, Deacon, Science master, Science student, and Awake, among others.
Alaba, said the championship which is first of its kind in the history of the club was borne out of the need to engage and encourage the golfers in the category of handicap 28 to step up.
“We have some new members in this category and it’s essential for them to play so as to ascertain their skills and capabilities. It has also been observed that we have many members who have stayed so long playing 28 handicaps .
“With this tournament, some of them who play better would be upgraded to the next handicap,” Alaba said.
He said that 30 golfers have so far registered and that registration was still ongoing.
“We have what it takes to accommodate 70 participants who would compete for trophies and cash prizes,” he said.
Also a member of the committee, Mr Tony Gbegbaje, urged all participants to put in their best, adding is essential for them to adhere to all rules and regulations guiding the game.
“In the golfing community there’s comrade rivalry and this competition is a good avenue to know the best among the boasters,” he said.
IGC treasurer, who is also a member of the committee, Mike Babalola, said that the one-day tournament will feature guest players so as to participate in the tournament.
Babalola said that the guest players are members of other handicaps who are better than handicap 28.
“I’m hopeful that before the end of registration, we would have more participants and this would make the competition more competitive,” he said.
Meanwhile, the course officer, Mr Bunmi Oladimeji said the course is in good shape to help the golfers enjoy rounds of golf.
Other members of the organising committee are Ayo Lijinrin and Mr Olaide Oladipupo.
