I’m not happy with Arteta, says Leno

Bernd Leno is still awaiting a full explanation from Mikel Arteta having lost his status as Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper to summer signing Aaron Ramsdale.

The Germany international began the campaign as the club’s undisputed No.1 but has been the highest profile casualty of a disastrous run which saw Mikel Arteta’s side lose their first three Premier League games, conceding nine goals in the process.

Ramsdale made his debut in last month’s 6-0 Carabao Cup win over West Brom but was promoted to Arteta’s Premier League starting XI against Norwich and has retained his place ever since.

Leno, meanwhile, featured in last week’s league cup victory over AFC Wimbledon but claims he hasn’t been told why he lost his place to the England Under-21 international.

Speaking to Bild as quoted by Sport Witness, Leno said: ‘There was no clear reason why I was out, but it had nothing to do with my performance. He is the trainer, he decides. Of course, it’s difficult for me.’

Ramsdale now looks set for an extended run in the side after another impressive display in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Tottenham in the north London derby.

Leno, who was linked with a move to Inter during the summer transfer window, maintains he is in no rush to make any knee-jerk decisions but will assess his options come January should he remain out in the cold.
