The Imo State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has held a one-day training for sports journalists on ‘Ethics & Professionalism in the Generative AI Era’.

The event took place at the OtownGist Media and Creative Hub, Owerri, and was led by Chinedu Hardy Nwadike, founder of the hub.

The workshop, themed “Ethics and Professionalism in the Generative AI Era,” formed part of SWAN, Imo May 2026 Congress and focused on the responsible use of artificial intelligence in modern journalism. It also examined ethics, professionalism, and credibility in sports reporting.

Participants discussed the impact of emerging technologies on newsroom operations and digital storytelling, with emphasis on the need for journalists to maintain accuracy, originality, and responsible reporting while adapting to new tools.

Nwadike introduced participants to AI-powered tools used in match reporting, interview transcription, content development, newsroom automation, and online distribution.

The practical session included demonstrations on how artificial intelligence can support speed and productivity in newsrooms and help journalists meet demands in the digital media space.

Participants were also guided on how to integrate AI into daily reporting workflows without compromising editorial standards.

Nwadike said artificial intelligence should serve as a support tool and not replace human judgment and professional ethics.

Journalists were urged to prioritise verification, fact-checking, and credibility in all AI-assisted reports as SWAN, Imo continues efforts to prepare members for evolving demands in sports journalism.
