Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu stated a contract extension had been ‘agreed in principle’, but the midfielder has rejected the claims.
Iniesta was brief, but clear. “No”, he said, responding to media asking about the potential deal, fueling doubts about his future with the Spanish giants.
Bartomeu has been heavily criticised after allowing Neymar’s departure to PSG and failing to secure a number of key transfer targets before the window closed last week.
The midfield maestro’s current position, with his contract expiring on June 30 next year, represents another problem for the Barcelona board. The club will want to tie the 33-year-old down to a new deal and put an end to interest from Italian giants Juventus.
Iniesta is a consistent starter in Ernesto Valverde’s side and has been an instrumental figure at the Camp Nou over the last 15 years. If the club legend does not sign a new contract extension, he will leave on a free next summer.
