Isak’s transfer saga ‘lose-lose situation’ for Newcastle — Howe

Newcastle United manager, Eddie Howe has dismissed suggestions that the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak could prove beneficial for the club, instead describing the situation as a “lose-lose.”

The Swedish striker has been linked with a big-money move to Liverpool, sparking debate over whether Newcastle could emerge stronger by either retaining one of the world’s top forwards or cashing in on a deal that could ease the club’s financial pressures under Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Howe said on Isak’s transfer saga, “I don’t see it as a win-win at all. With just over a week left of the transfer window, losing a player of his calibre would be very difficult to manage.”

Howe said the situation has not changed and Isak will not be in the squad to face Liverpool, of all teams, on Monday night.

“The club has to act in the best interests of Newcastle United and it will do that in every situation,” he said in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

“I think it’s a lose-lose situation for us to a degree, as I don’t think we can come out of this winning.

“It’s a difficult situation to manage in the sense of what he’s contributed to the football club and how professional he has been. It’s been an unfortunate couple of months that look like they’re coming to an end soon.”

On the other hand, if Isak remains, Howe conceded the challenge will be reintegrating a player who has already signalled his desire to leave.

The 25-year-old made his position clear earlier this week, leaving doubts over his long-term commitment to the club.

Despite that, Howe insisted the door is still open for Isak to play for Newcastle again. “I’ve got no issues with Alex as a professional. He’s been outstanding in his three years here.

“The situation is regrettable, but his daily conduct and character have always been first-class,” Howe said.

The manager also suggested that Newcastle’s squad would not oppose his return to the fold if a transfer does not materialise.

“The players respect him, and I believe they would welcome him back,” he added.

Isak has been a key figure since joining Newcastle, with his goals helping the club back into the Champions League last season. Losing him would represent a significant setback, particularly given the time constraints of the transfer window.

As of now, Liverpool are yet to meet Newcastle’s valuation, though speculation continues that an improved offer could force a decision.

Howe, however, made clear his priority: keeping the focus on football. “We all want this resolved quickly,” he said. “But until then, we prepare as if Alex is part of our squad.”
