Japanese baseball star set to land biggest MLB contract worth N447bn

Japanese baseball star Shohei Ohtani is on the verge of landing the biggest contract in MLB history, according to the LA Times.

The publication reports that Ohtani could receive a 12-year, $600m (N447bn) deal, a figure that is only within reach of a few top players.

The sports contract specialist site, Spotrac, has estimated a potential deal of $230 million for pitching and $333 million for hitting over ten years, resulting in a total of $563 million.

Current record-holder, Ohtani’s teammate Mike Trout, has a 12-season contract worth $426.5 million, according to Cuarto Bat.

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw believes that Ohtani is incomparable in baseball history, stating, “I don’t know if he’ll ever have anyone to compare to him in the entire history of baseball.”

The 27-year-old two-way player, who pitches and bats, had an excellent season in 2021, with a 3.18 ERA and 46 home runs.
