Jose Mourinho’s mission to topple Chelsea

The Portuguese manager has now become the nemesis of the club where he was once loved, as he attempts to wrestle the title back from Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho won three Premier League titles over two spells at Stamford Bridge, entering the club’s hall of fame and becoming a hero for Blues fans.

However, last season ‘the Special One’ returned to west London, this time in charge of Manchester United and, as Chelsea fans chanted ‘Judas’ at their old manager, Mourinho stuck up three fingers to remind the crowd of the three league titles he had won for the club.

‘I am a professional,’ he said in the post-match interview, ‘I defend my club. Until the moment [Chelsea] have a manager that wins four Premier Leagues for them, I’m the No1. When they have somebody who wins four Premier Leagues for them, I’ll be No2. For this moment, “Judas” is No1’.

That was enough to further anger the Blues, and the Portuguese manager has responded in his own particular way: he will do anything to come above Chelsea.

First, Jose snatched Conte’s top transfer target from under his nose, even though Alvaro Morata seemed destined to join the Red Devils. Romelu Lukaku snubbed Chelsea for United.

Mourinho has already set his sights on his next man: Tiemoue Bakayoko. United have told Monaco they will improve on Chelsea’s bid for the midfielder, with Conte prepared to fight back in order to not lose another of his objectives.

Chelsea finished last season 24 points ahead of the Red Devils last season, claiming the Premier League title in Conte’s first season in charge, and Mourinho started to work on his squad to avoid any recurrence of the defeat and close the gap on his former side.

Manchester United’s aim is to win the Premier League, anything less will be considered a failure. For Jose, however, finishing above Conte’s side as he lifts the trophy would be an added bonus.
